Baptism at South Church
Baptism is one of two sacraments celebrated at South Church. It is a rite of passage into the Christian Faith. Parents, the congregation, and our God enter a three-way, sacred covenant. We each make promises. Parents promise to expose their child to all that is of God, to bring their child to the church for religious education, and to let their home be a place there the language of prayer is spoken and where stories of the Bible are explored. The congregation vows to be good role models for the life of faith, to support the child with love, and to support the parents with presence and prayer. God promises always to forgive when forgiveness is needed, to provide daily bread that satisfies the spiritual hungers, and to love without condition. The ritual of Baptism happens in the context of Sunday worship when the community is gathered in Christ’s name. Sponsors or godparents may be invited into the covenant; though this is not a requirement. Baptism initiates a life-giving relationship that flourishes when all parties are faithful to their promises.
