Welcome! We are grateful that you are visiting our website. South Church is a vibrant faith community, known for our commitment to social justice, our engaging ministries for youth and children, and our inspiring worship services.
South Church was founded in 1836 in South Glastonbury, as a small community church for the farmers and their families that lived here. Today South Glastonbury is much larger, and so are we, but we have retained our identity as being a church grounded in the local community. We gather host public events and support our neighbors in times of crisis. During the week we open our doors to dozens of local groups that meet in our building. We take joy in being a strong and visible presence in our town, and we welcome newcomers to join us in our mission.
We are an incredibly active church, and it is often said that, “there is something for everyone.” Whether it is weekly Bible study, service projects, youth gatherings, or team ministry meetings, there is something happening almost every day of the week. We believe in putting our faith in action, so we are a church that is engaged in education, mission work, and intentional prayer. When participating in a church activity, the positive energy is visible and it is often easy to feel the Holy Spirit at work among us.
At South Church, we take our Open and Affirming stance seriously. We strive to create a faith community that is welcoming to all individuals and families. We hope this to be especially true for people who have been historically rejected by or cast out of other churches or faith traditions, such as members of the LGBT community. We also take serious our call to advocate for those who are denied access to civil rights, to decent shelter, to meaningful employment and equal opportunity.
We would like visitors to know that we have a fully accessible church. There are handicap parking spaces as well as designated spaces near our main entrances for those with mobility issues. Our main entrances to the church building from either parking lot are equipped with electronic doors, and our elevator is accessible to every floor of the building, including the sanctuary. In the sanctuary, there is a handicap accessible pew that accommodates wheelchairs and walkers. Our accessible building is a part of our hope to be a welcoming community to all, and was made possible due to a recent Capital Campaign.
We hope you will plan a visit to South Church. It would be a pleasure to welcome you to our community of faith.
